iPhone Buying Guide
Tips for Buying Used iPhones
- Examine the Seller's Experience To minimize any possible scams, review the sellers history. Generally, you will want to limit your sellers to feedback above 98-99%. Feedback will help reflect their shipping integrity, speed, and willingness to work with buyers. Check to see comments from previous buyers and the items that they have sold. If the seller has extensive used phone experience, it is a good sign. Make sure you ask as many questions as possible ...the more helpful the seller is, the better.
- Look for descriptive descriptions Images can be deceiving! You cannot rely on merely the picture or description itself. Be cautious of short description - ask many questions and be wary of limited and questionable answers. Avoid descriptions that contain the phrase, "as is." This condition often means that there is something wrong with the iPhone - with the lack of exchanges, refunds, or returns.
- Check for Refund Policies It is a smart idea to make sure there is a sound refund policy from the seller. If they are confident about their listing and phone, they should be willing to refund you with a cash back option. Make sure you inspect and test the phone thoroughly when you receive it. Check for exterior damage or interior water damage. The iPhone has a moisture detector which helps keep people honest. If you check under the battery, there should be a small white visible dot. If the dot is missing, red, or tampered with, do not keep the iPhone. (Before purchasing, I would ask the seller to check for this)
- Find one unlocked or one with the same carrier Not all iPhones work with every carrier, so if you currently have a specific contract with a carrier, make sure that it matches! If not, opt for an unlocked phone which are easier to come by these days.
- Make sure there is a verifiable ESN All iPhones come with an electronic serial number, ESN. This number is needed to activate the phone. Used iPhones will not activate if the ESN number has been listed as lost or stolen. Check with the seller to see if they are willing to offer the ESN number so you can activate with ease and to eliminate the chance that it has been blacklisted.
- Check for FCC Compliancy Since 2005, the Federal Communication Commission requires all mobile devices to be GPS enabled. If the user requires 911 emergency assistance, the GPS is imperative to locate the user. Therefore it is imperative that the iPhone is FCC complaint and GPS enabled before purchasing.
- Research and be Selective! Spend some time to familiarize yourself with the differences of the different models. They will vary in features, options, speed, or memory. Many iPhone users are constantly upgrading their phones. Arm yourself with as much information as possible so you can make the best choice that will fit your budget. Factor in taxes, additional fees, shipping times and costs. The more you educate yourself with the features, carriers, policies, the more money you will save!
